Francesco Gioacchini: Closing Lines

The pandemic, through 2020-21, changed temporarily the way of exhibiting works and experiencing a show. Due to the restrictions many exhibition spaces in Berlin, but not only, have decided to adopt a window-show approach by keeping a place closed but still having projects and exhibitions visible to viewers from outside, without entering the place. Francesco Gioacchini: Closing Lines was one of these exhibitions held at WerkStadt Berlin e.V.

For this project the artist decided to metaphorise the closure of the space by applying newspapers on the windows, in the same way as it happens during the renovation of a place. In that case, the newspaper is a means to hide the interiors which are under renovation and is a way to not reveal the renewed place until the works are finalised.

In Francesco Gioacchini’s installation the newspapers are used to “show” the closure itself. There is nothing to hide; nothing is happening inside. The only things to see are the windows themselves and the newspapers on them.
